IMPACT

Rob Quist (D) is a native Montana and candidate for Montana’s at-large House seat vacated by Ryan Zinke (appt Secretary of Interior). Quist has high name recognition as an award-winning songwriter but is also an experienced small business owner and entrepreneur. He has the opportunity to be an independent voice and stand up for issues he and Montana voters care about: defending public lands from being sold off to the highest bidder, healthcare we can all afford, and standing up for Montana farmers and ranchers instead of Wall Street banks.


This is tough area for a democrat but a Democratic governor was just re-elected and the opponent -- an out-of-state multi-millionaire who is self-funding his own campaign -- the Governor beat is also Quist’s opponent. And because it’s a special election, there is the opportunity to dramatically impact who turns out to vote - change the outcome and close the gap.

PROJECT

The Quist campaign knows they have a tough road in front of them and they want to be smart about spreading the right messages to the right people. For millennials (18-30) that means utilizing texting and social proof. In the immediate term: the TFC team will help quickly develop a texting program that uses college kids as volunteers to send 1:1 texts to a) friends based on their phone address book and b) others in the voter file. Texting is said to have a 35% response, this is far greater than FB. We are using Hustle for 1:1 texting and connection to the voter file.

Outcomes - Metrics:

  1. Increase college-age voter turnout*

  2. Understand if/how texting can engage voters - % of voters that respond

  3. Understand which types of messages work best on text (see B2 below)

    1. Does voter response change if message from someone they know - compare voter response rates on all messages, those sent to friends, those sent to random people in the voter file

    2. Which content and theme combinations get the highest response rates

  4. See if you can use text to get voters to share with friends  - on social media or text - % shares, estimate of views on those shares.

The team will be responsible for working very closely with the Field team and helping to write messages, train volunteers, capture+analyze data and tweak based on that.

This will likely inform a larger peer-to-peer texting roll-out in the next few weeks that this team would then lead as well.


The need

  • Team lead - you’ll be main POC with the campaign and helping create initial process doc to make the workaround for social and A/B testing of messages more seamless.

  • Marketing - Help develop  text message language - you love developing messaging and experimenting based on feedback

  • Data and Metrics matching - help match or create process to match the VCF/CSV file to voter data; record and look at outcome-based metrics

TIME

6-7 hrs per person per week starting ASAP - until May 25th (election date)
